What are the Healthiest Takeout Foods? ONE - If you like Thai, go for the Thai-style chicken. It's loaded with vegetables and served in a hallowed-out pineapple. Also a good choice is summer rolls, which are usually wrapped in low-calorie rice paper and filled with bean sprouts and other steamed vegetables, shrimp and/or fish. TWO - If it's Chinese food you crave, go for wonton soup. It's light, refreshing and flavorful. One caveat: it can be high in sodium, so be sure to drink a lot of water. You're also safe eating beef, chicken or shrimp with broccoli (heavy on the green stuff). Ask for the sauce on the side, and choose brown rice over white; its richer in nutrients and higher in fiber, so you'll crave fewer fortune cookies. THREE - When ordering Mexican choose chicken, shrimp or vegetable fajitas. Ask for a side of corn tortillas in place of the chips. You'll be surprised how good they are rolled and dipped in salsa. Another healthy pick is the black bean soup. It will fill you up (beans are packed with fiber) and, as a bonus, help prevent heart disease. Or you could ask for a plain bean burrito. Ask for lettuce and salsa inside, and skip the cheese and sour cream to keep the calories down. FOUR - If your ordering Indian food, order tandoori anything. The meat is marinated ahead of time in a mixture of spices and yogurt, then baked. Even better, tandoori chicken is often made without the skin, cutting as much as 12 grams of fat off of the total tally. Also, you can't go wrong going with vegetarian curry, or you could order dal, a pureed-lentil side dish used as a spread and stuffing for bread. It's high in fiber and loaded with flavor. FIVE - If it's pizza that satisfies your taste buds, go for the vegetable topped pies and easy on the cheese. Some places also have chicken for a topping. Order thin, whole-wheat crust, which has extra fiber. |
