"Surgeon General's Report" On July 11, 1996, The Surgeon General's Report (SGR) on Physical Activity and Health was released to the public. The essence of the message was as follows: THE SURGEON GENERAL HAS DETERMINED THAT LACK OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IS DETRIMENTAL TO YOUR HEALTH. For the first time in history, the federal government, the entire medical community, the insurance industry and the media have accepted and embraced this mandate. The report finds that 250,000 people suffer premature death annually due to lack of physical activity-approximately the same number who will die prematurely from smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. Today , more than 60% of adults do not achieve the recommended amount of physical activity. In fact, 25% are not active at all.
