"Surgeon General's Report"

On July 11, 1996, The Surgeon General's Report (SGR) on Physical Activity and Health was released to the public.  The essence of the message was as follows:

THE SURGEON GENERAL HAS DETERMINED THAT LACK OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IS DETRIMENTAL TO YOUR HEALTH.

For the first time in history, the federal government, the entire medical community, the insurance industry and the media have accepted and embraced this mandate.

The report finds that 250,000 people suffer premature death annually due to lack of physical activity-approximately the same number who will die prematurely from smoking a pack of cigarettes a day.

Today , more than 60% of adults do not achieve the recommended amount of physical activity.  In fact, 25% are not active at all.  Nearly half of all young people, ages 12-21, are not vigorously active on a regular basis.

The benefits of regular exercise has been proven to:

  • Reduce the risk of dying from heart disease
  • Reduce the risk of dying from diabetes
  • Reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure
  • Reduce the risk of developing colon cancer
  • Reduce feelings of depression and anxiety
  • Help weight control
  • Help build and maintain healthy bones, muscles and joints
  • Help older adults become stronger and better able to move without falling
  • Promote psychological well-being.

If you are not already exercising regularly, begin a program today.  If you are already engaged in regular exercise, keep it up!
